Design System

Illustrations

Why did we switch to an illustration system?

As designers for an insurance company, we always tried to humanise our product insurances to help users identify themselves.

For this purpose, we were using a lot of visuals to represent real people in action as workers, families, children...
But the type of visuals available on royalty-free sites were often very "American". A French user couldn't project himself in a picture with an American hospital, an SUV driver in the streets of New York or a farmer working on an Arizona farm.

That's why we decided to create a homemade illustrations.
But the ability to draw illustrations isn't within the reach of every designer.
That's why we created a flow allowing graphic and UI designers to make their resources available so that everyone can reuse them in their flows.

Inclusiveness

3 illustrations made by Théo Hinfray at AXA that represent, one girl working on her laptop working on a chair, one couple sitting on a couch with a dog and a family cuddling on a sofa.

Designing our own illustrations allowed us to brought more inclusiveness.

Concrete example

Working on an "everyday accidents" insurance, I wanted to highlight the protection of DIY accidents covered by the insurance. During my research, it was impossible to find a high quality visual with a woman handling a tool.

With this project, I was able to design a woman using a drill and add her to our illustration system with the idea that it could be reused after.

Helpful

Screenshot of a page to validate an insurance quote. The previous illustrations show a family, a young couple and a single girl to explain the difference in rates between the 3 formulas of the quote.

Adding key elements that helps users achieve ther goal in our Illustrations System simplifies the workflow of all designers looking to create visuals quickly for their interfaces.

Concrete example

After an online application process, we knew that our users were mentally overloaded because each step involved insurance jargon that was complicated for the average person to understand. So I added an illustration at the end of the user journey to reassure users about the finalisation of their quotation.

To create this illustration, I designed people representing each formula (solo, couple and family), peaceful elements as a dog and some plants, and a shield to explicitly represent the number of people covered by the formula to the Illustration System.

Serving tough subjects

*Illustrations designed by Mohamed Betta and myself.

In the field of insurance, some topics are difficult to tackle and the visuals you find can be anxiety-provoking.

Designing peaceful illustration composition with pastel colors and soft lights adds a much needed touch of softness to the .

Concrete example

When I had to work on the redesign of the health universe. I was confronted with insurance products that cover subjects wich was not easy to bring to the user such as psychological care for young people, assistance to the elderly in loss of autonomy, support for children's health costs...

That's why we decided to add simple objects with soft color gradients to represent our health solutions.
